For Non- Biology students
Molecular Biology and biochemistry - Definition of life, Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell and their differences, Organs, Tissue, Cell structure, Cellular Organelles, Central Dogma, Operons, Carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism etc.

For Biology students
Basics of computers, Analog and Digital computers, Generations of computers, Architecture.

Hardware and Software
Basic concepts, Operating systems- basics, System Tools- MS Office package, Conversion system-binary, hexadecimal and others, logical Gates.

C & Data Structure
Introduction to C, Origin and history of C, Semantics, Variables, Operators, Syntax, Loops, Functions, Arrays, Pointers, Memory allocation, File handling, Searching, Sorting, Stacks and Queues etc.

PERL
Introduction and basics of PERL, variables, numbers, operators, loops, Arrays, Hashes, Control structures, File handling, strings manipulations, regular expressions etc.

DBMS
Introduction to Database and Oracle, different types of biological and non Biological databases, Relational databases, DDL, DML, SQL introduction, Table creation and manipulation with SQL, Joining, Constraints, Query formation and data extraction.

Numerical Methods and Optimization Techniques (NMOT)
Introduction to higher level mathematics and calculus, Integration, Differentiation,
Derivatives, Partial derivatives, Optimization problems and their solutions, Different Search methods including GA, Different types of models of Artificial Neural Networks,Radial Basis Functions, Response surface optimization.

Statistical Modeling- Designing of Experiments and other methods.
Advanced Computing Techniques (Neural / Evolutionary)
Different types of evolutionary computing methods available, Random Walk, Monte
Carlo Simulations, Simulated Annealing, Genetic Algorithm and its application in protein Structure related calculations, ACO and its applications, GP and its applications, SVM And its applications.

Parallel Computing
Overview of parallel computing, Concepts on parallel processors, Shared memory Processor, MPI – send, receive, broadcast, scatter, gather etc., OPEN MP, PTHREADS,fork, join, grid technology

Bioinformatics is an emerging discipline at the convergence of computing and the life sciences aimed at development of technologies for storing, extracting, organising, analysing, interpreting information being generated. It is truly an interdisciplinary field. Not only have advances in computing helped accelerate the process of data generation, but the need to process and analyse this vast amount of information has led to advances in both software technologies (databases, algorithm design, machine learning and visualisation) and hardware architectures (IBM's investment in the development of petaflop computers is directly motivated by Bioinformatics problems). Additionally, there is considerable interest in Bioinformatics from researchers in medicine and mathematics.

Course Goal


Various data analysis methodologies will be studied within the context of different problem settings in molecular biology. Integrated analysis approaches to discover regulatory networks (clustering, motif enrichment, pathway alignment, probabilistic regulatory programs).
